The PRCAI event on Thursday, 2nd December 2004
in Mumbai was a lively and interactive event with participants
asking for many more such events.
Sourav Majumdar, Resident Editor, Financial Express and
Mr. Sanjay Pugalia of CNBC (TV 18) shared their views
followed by a Q&A session.
T
The key points discussed were -:
•
In the 90s journalists tried to avoid
/ dodge PR people, but in the 2000s they seek them
as the first source of credible information. Some
senior and powerful PR practitioners are even quoted
on behalf of CEOs
•
PR Practitioners need to do more in terms of understanding
and customizing news.
•
It's important to track papers and TV Channels
to spot if any one media house is consistently "missing"
the story, seek out opportunities to educate the
concerned journo and maximize information.
•
Indian news media has still not cracked reportage
of the "entertainment / media" beat. That's
why we see so much reportage / promotion of celebs
at new store launches / events etc.
•
What irritates journalists: Too much follow-up
on invitations and press releases at 7.30 pm in
the evenings
•
Lack of mentorship & training at Media houses
is leading to movement of journalists from print
to TV and PR outfits.
•
It's the PR Practitioner's equal responsibility
to educate and hand-hold fresh journalists about
their industry until they are up to speed
•
Journalists do not appreciate gifts, especially
cash gifts
